Question 1

What inspired you to make the donuts?

Accepted Answer

Andy was listening to the 2nd season of Critical Role, the well-known Actual Play series. At the same time, he was looking for a dice vault that was more unique than the hexagonal vaults that were becoming popular. Then inspiration struck and he realized how he might design the first version of the donuts. So he made one. And if you have one donut, you need a dozen. And if you have a dozen donuts, you've got to sell some donuts.

Question 2

Are they real donuts?

Accepted Answer

Yes. In the sense that they look like a donut and have frosting and sprinkles. But they aren't as sweet as an edible donut. Their shelf-life is amazing though.

Question 3

What can I use them for?

Accepted Answer

They're designed to hold 26mm dice sets. But they can also hold small jewelry like rings, earrings and necklaces. They also work for sewing items like bobbins and needles. They are also just really pretty and make good home decor in a kitchen or on a shelf.

Question 4

Where are the donuts made?

Accepted Answer

All of the donuts are handmade. They are produced in Berkeley using a combination of domestic and exotic hardwoods.

Question 5

How do you make the donuts?

Accepted Answer

There are a lot of steps and we've been working and finalizing the design for several years. First we select kiln-dried hardwoods like Walnut, Oak, Cherry and Maple. The lumber is planed, trimmed and sanded to flat boards, then put on a computer controlled milling machine where the pockets for magnets and dice are cut, along with the basic donut shape. The top and bottom are paired to match grain and rounded over, then sanded on a lathe from 80 grit up to 300 grit and polished. Each donut receives a hand-rubbed linseed oil finish. The frosting is cast separately out of a recyclable thermoplastic, sanded, primed, painted with acrylic paint, and dipped in acrylic gel with glass bugle bead sprinkles. Magnets and felt are added to the wood, the frosting is paired by color and hue and epoxied to the top, and each donut ships with a certificate of authenticity and a custom pink suede bag.

Question 6

How long does it take to make a donut?

Accepted Answer

After years of working on the donuts, it now takes about 2 hours of effort for each donut, usually spread over several weeks as we work in batches on larger sets.

Question 7

Why are they so expensive?

Accepted Answer

As a premium, totally handmade and unique piece of functional art, we think they're priced fairly. Roughly half of the cost of each donut comes from materials and the labor of sanding and finishing, which means they are sometimes a little pricey.

Question 8

Why make a coffee cup dice tower?

Accepted Answer

Nothing goes better with a donut than coffee, so it felt appropriate to make a fake coffee cup to go with an inedible donut.

Question 9

How are the Chimera Coffee dice towers made?

Accepted Answer

We have the stair inserts made by a vendor, and the cups are actual cups sourced externally. We use a router to cut holes in the top and side of the cups at precise locations, then the insert is glued in and one of our coffee-branded stickers is applied to the outside.

Question 10

Is the dice tower a real coffee cup?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is a real coffee cup. That's one of the things that makes it most surprising at the table — it's also not fragile at all, since the insert makes it rigid and light, and it sounds great when the dice go through it.
